# Japanese Names

> Japanese Names is an English-language reference and generation website for Japanese personal names. It provides database-backed Japanese full-name, given-name, and surname tools with kanji, kana readings, romaji, meaning notes, and evidence-aware explanations.

Japanese Names uses stored spelling-and-reading records rather than inventing arbitrary kanji combinations. The standard generators are not generative AI. The optional AI-assisted beta interprets a user's natural-language preferences, but all recommended names, readings, written forms, and displayed meanings still come from the site's structured records.

Important interpretation notes:

- Japanese name order normally places the family name before the given name.
- A given-name meaning belongs to a particular kanji spelling; the same reading may have multiple written forms and meanings.
- Kanji glosses explain character components and do not prove a name bearer's intended meaning.
- A surname's literal kanji meaning does not prove one geographic origin, lineage, or shared ancestry.
- Detail pages are published only for a small editorially reviewed set. The broader database remains available through the generators and browse hubs without creating thin standalone pages.
- Generated full-name pairings can be plausible without being common or belonging to a known person. Important real-world naming decisions should be reviewed by a fluent Japanese speaker or qualified naming professional.
